The Internet and the WEB

Course Introduction…

This course is presented by the Computer Learning Center.  The teaching methods are based on the Learning Pyramid.  Retention comes primarily by experience.  Our small class size is ideal for discussion.  To facilitate discussion it is requested that participants be inquisitive and ask questions.

The LEARNING PYRAMID

National Training Laboratories, Bethal, Maine

The course will involve hands on experience; practice by doing.  Time in the laboratory will be used for increasing our knowledge of the fundamentals of the technology, both hardware and software.  Anything done with personal computers is accomplished by using stored instructions; for both the operator/user and the computer’s processor.  Stored instructions are known as programs and/or applications.  Applications require both installation and set-up.  Applications are the tools of the computer.  Much of this course will involve setting up and becoming familiar with applications used to navigate the internet and process e-mail messages.

General Information…

The Computer Learning Center (CLC) has a variety of courses available for clients.  Many of these courses rely on the material contained in reference texts.  There are two very similar texts both by maranGraphics; one is Windows XP Illustrated and the other is Windows Vista Illustrated.  The book recommended for each client is the one consistent with their computer’s operating system.  For XP the chapters are 11 and 12.  For Vista the chapters are 10 and 11.  It is recommended that one of these books be used as a reference.  The Internet itself is a great learning resource.  You are encouraged to spend several hours on each of the concepts presented in class.  This time spent will allow you to become familiar with the tools and ideas behind the Internet and Web.
